Flexibility and Mobility Concepts Flashcards
Flexibility
Refers to absolute range of motion, or relative range of motion, of a joint as a result of muscles that cross the joint.
Mobility
The body and its ability to move.
Fascia
A layer of fibrous tissue that wraps around between all muscles, tendons, ligaments, organs and systems of the body.
Static Stretching
The practice of stretching in which the muscle is held at a constant elongated length with the purpose of increasing flexibility.
Dynamic Stretching
A type of stretching that is performed through various common movements at a specific joint.
Sagittal Plane
The plane that divides the body into left and right sides. The movements that occur in this plane are primarly flexion and extension movements.
Frontal Plane
The plane of movement that cuts the body into an anterior portion and posterior portion. Movements occuring along this plane include abduction, adduction, and lateral flexion.
Transverse Plane
The plane that divides the body into upper and lower halves. Movements occuring along this plane typically involve twisting and rotation.
ROM
Range of Motion: The degree of motion possible in a particular joint.
Hypermobility
A state of excessive range of motion capacity at a particular joint. Can be a potentially injurious state because of increased instability at the joint site.
