flexibility Flashcards
flexibility
ability to move joints through their full range of motion
agonist
contracting muscle
antagonist
muscle being stretched
factors affecting flexibility
bone, structure, tissue, tendons, ligaments, age, sex, injury, improper training, sedentary, excessive body fat
dynamic flexbility
stiffness; refers to how quickly tissue resistance rises during movement
benefits of flexibility
increase ROM, improved performance and strength, injury prevention, joint health, prevention of lower back pain, relief of aches and pains, maintenance of good posture, relaxation
muscle spindles
monitor changes in muscle length; sensitive to fast stretches
golgi tendon organ
sensitive to increase in muscular tension; causes a muscle to reflexively relax
autogenic inhibition
relaxation in the muscle experiencing tension
reciprocal inhibition
relaxation in the muscle opposing the muscle experiencing increased tension
passive stretching
muscles are stretched by force applied by an outside force.
active stretching
muscles are stretched by contraction of opposing muscle
PNF
passive and active muscle actions
static stretching
end position held without movement, slowly stretch to discomfort
dynamic stretching
activity specific movements; controlled movement at end of range, develops active flexibility
