fitness across the lifespan Flashcards
physical activity
any body movement carried out by the skeletal muscles that requires energy
exercise
planned, structured, repetitive movement of the body designed to improve or maintain physical fitness
benefits in children
greater strength and endurance, enhanced bone formation, reduced anxiety and stress, improved self esteem and efficacy, minimization of heart disease risk factors, fun, social interaction
benefits in older adults
continued independent living, physical and mental health, more energy, fewer aches and pains, better posture and balance
activity guidelines
children - 60min/day
resistance training
training against opposing force
what happens as we age? cardiovascular
heart-increased left ventricle hypertrophy, elasticity of blood vessels decreases, resting cardiac output and stroke volume decreases, max heart rate and max volume of oxygen decrease
what happens as we age? muscle
loss of muscle mass, strength, power
what happens as we age? bone
osteoporosis
osteoporosis
process of diminishing bone mass and deterioration of internal bone
what happens as we age? body composition
lean body mass, total body water, and BMR decrease.
body fat increases, basal metabolic rate decreases as lean body mass decreases
goal: maintain body composition
reduce calories from fat, increase complex carbs, increase calcium and vitamin D, exercise, drink plenty of fluids
