Flashcards Round 2
Hydrocarbons general formula
C(2)H(2n+2)
Plane fuel
Kerosine
Feedstock
A chemical used to make other chemicals
Functional group
a group of atoms responsible for the characteristic reactions of a particular compound (wikipedia)
Homologous series
Part of the same functional group (so for alkenes they all have an extra carbon atom and two extra hydrogen atoms)
Result when alkanes combust compared to alkenes
CO2 and water. Same with alkenes, but as they produce unburned carbon particles this is incomplete combustion, and have a smokey flame
What is used for hydrogenation to speed up reaction
150 degree heat and a nickel catalyst
What happens when ethene reacts with water and what are the conditions
Ethanol - it’s a reversible reaction, the water must be steam, pressure should be 70atm, temp. needs to be 300 degrees, and phosphoric acid is used as catalyst
Describe fermentation
Glucose + yeast + 30 degrees = ethanol + co2
Characteristics of alcohol
- Soluble in water
- Form neutral solutions
Relationship between carbon atoms and solubility
More carbon atoms = less solubility
What happens when you add an alcohol to an oxidising agent
Said alcohol -ic acid, and water
Excess products when an alcohol is combusted in air
CO2 and water
Carboxylic acid functional group
Describe carboxylic acids in water
They are weak acids, as some hydrogen atoms are ionised (H+)
