Flap Asymmetry Flashcards

1
Q

If you cannot fix an asymmetric flap condition, how should you perform a landing?

A

Land via a straight in, maintain 20 KCAS above final approach and touchdown speeds. Do not touchdown below 165 KCAS

Q

If the flaps are extended at high speeds, what could happen?

A

An instantaneous failure can occur of one or both flaps. If only one flap fails, it will induce both a severe rolling and yawing moment, possibly with high negative G’s. If this is encountered, immediately retract the flaps to the UP position to ensure recovery.

Q

What can result form certain failures of the right flap linkage?

A

They can result in the flap synchro being out of range, causing an ADC FAIL PFL, AOA indications on the MFD and HUD will be removed and the AOA indexer light will illuminate. However, all other ADC functions will be normal. If this occurs, fly a no flap airspeed on final if the flap lever is set to less than 60%

Q

If you have a flap asymmetry that cannot be resolved by putting the flaps to up, what is one possible solution?

A

Set the AUX Flap switch to Emer and see if you can find a range where both flaps are in a similar position. From this, determine what % of flaps you are using in order to fly a proper pattern. If the flap setting is less than 60%, fly AOA and on speed indications on final. Greater than 60%, fly normal pattern airspeeds.

Q

What is the general corrective (checklist) actions when experiencing a flap asymmetry?

A
  1. Throttles - Max
  2. Flap Lever - Actuate to eliminate or mini extra the flap asymmetric condition
  3. Airspeed - Above 180 knots (to ensure aileron forces are capable of overcoming roll tendency)
  4. Aux Flap Switch - EMER
    If asymmetry persists
  5. Airspeed - Maintain 20 KCAS above final approach and touchdown speeds. Do not touchdown below 165 knots

Generally, Increase the power to ensure sufficient airspeed exists to gain aileron authority to counteract the rolling motion created by the flap asymmetry. Move the flap lever to see if that fixes the issue, if it does not, attempt to do so using the aux flap switch. If nothing works, fly the above airspeed for touchdown
