Flamable Liquids Flashcards
What are the 3 operating modes?
Offensive
Defensive
Non-intervention
Non-intervention
no action until risk reduced
used while assembling resources
consider for large scale events(rail)
Recon Considerations
Life Hazard
product type, hydrocarbon or polar solvent
Leaking? flow rate? already spilled amount? total product spilled?
where is the product going?
Class B
Hydrogcarbons
polar solvents
Hydrocarbon
Organic compound found in in petroleum products. Typically includes gasoline and diesel fuel
Polar Solvent
Flammable liquids that mix readily with water. Ex alcohol, ketones
Combustible Liquid
Liquid having a flash point above 100 degrees and below 200 degrees
Flammable Liquid
liquid having a flash point below 100 and vapor pressure not exceeding 40psi
A small spill is
55 gal or less
a large spill is
55 gal or more
Reformulated Gasoline
gasoline in which the composition has been changed to reduce automotive emissions. Lower levels of volatile compounds and benzene and contains oxygenate. reacts more like a polar solvent
3 types of fixed facility containment
primary
secondary
tertiary
Primary containment
tanks and piping where product is contained under normal operations
secondary containment
Diked area around tanks where product can go. controlled drainage areas
Tertiary containment
additional areas where product can be contained in the event of a catastrophic incident
