What is prosthodontics?
A body of knowledge and skills pertaining to:
- The restoration and replacement of the natural dentition with artificial substitutes
- The restoration of the dental arches with fixed or removable dental prosthesis.
What is fixed prosthodontics?
-The branch of prosthodontics concerned with the replacement and/or restoration of teeth by artificial substitutes that cannot be removed from the mouth by the patient. Mainly comprised of:
- Crowns
- Bridges
- Implant Crowns
- Full arch Implant supported Denture
What are we trying to accomplish with Fixed Prosthodontics?
-Restore function and esthetics of single teeth
-Replace missing teeth
-Improve comfort and chewing
-Complete, improve, or maintain the integrity of dental arches
-Patient self-image improvement
Prior to beginning any Fixed Prosthodontic work, it is important to understand the patient’s current total oral and systemic condition including:
-Patient Medical and Dental History
-Occlusal evaluation and TMJ evaluation
-Intraoral exam/Periodontal Exam
-Radiographic evaluation
-Mounted Diagnostic Casts
-Caries Risk Assessment
-Patient Expectations

What is a dental crown?
A cemented extra-coronal restoration covering the outer surface of a prepared tooth
A tooth is prepared for a full coverage crown with specific criteria in order to create:
- “Sleeve” retention
- A path of insertion
- A slight convergence of the walls of the tooth preparation to allow for seating of the crown

cemented intra-coronal restoration fabricated indirectly
What is an onlay?
– An inlay also replacing one or more cusps
What is a fixed dental prosthesis (bridge)?
crown replacing one or more missing teeth which is cemented to remaining teeth or implants
What could you ask about patient expectations?
- Are they reasonable?
- Are they achievable?
- Are they realistic?
- What would it take to meet
those expectations and are you able to do so?
What do mounted casts allow for?
-Allow for planning and visibility outside the patient mouth
-Can be used for Diagnostic Wax Up to predict treatment outcomes
-Can be excellent patient teaching tools
