FITT Principles Flashcards
Define frequency….
How often an athlete trains over a period of time (usually a week).
As the athlete becomes fitter, this may increase.
Define intensity….
How hard someone trains. Whatever type of training, it must be carried out at a worthwhile level of intensity.
As the athlete becomes fitter, this will increase.
Define time…
How long each training session must last in order to be of any benefit.
As the athlete becomes fitter, this may increase.
Define type….
The methods of training chosen to achieve a persons particular goal. Athletes may wish to improve a component of fitness, so they will pick a type of trainng to achieve this
Define progressive overload….
In order to progress, training needs to be demanding enough to cause the body to adapt, improving performance.
Define specificity….
Training should be specific to the individuals sport, activity or physical/skill-related goals to be developed.
Define individual needs/differences….
The programme should be designed to meet the individuals training goals and needs.
Define adaptation….
How the body reacts to training loads by increasing its ability to cope with those loads. Adaptation occurs during the recovery period after the training session has ended.
Define reversibility….
If training stops, or the intensity of training is not sufficient to cause adaptation, training effects are reversed.
Define variation….
It is important to vary the training regime to avoid boredom and maintain enjoyment.
Define rest and recovery….
It is required so that the body can recover from the training and to allow adaptation to occur.
