Fish Flashcards
What are the different types of scales and examples of fish with them?
Placoid – elasmobranchs
Cosmoid – lungfish/coelacanths
Gandoid – sturgeons, paddlefish
Ctenoid/Cycloid - teleosts
Label a fish and its fins
Anal fin
Caudal peduncle
Caudal fin
Lateral line
Dorsal fin
Operculum
Mouth
Pectoral fin
Pelvic fin
DORSAL
ANTERIOR
VENTRAL
POSTERIOR
What are the function of the specific fins?
Dorsal
pectoral
pelvic
anal
adipose
- Dorsal – balance/stabilization, sudden direction changes
- Pectoral – paired fins, directional changes, aid swimming and directional changes
- Pelvic – deceleration (brakes)
- Anal – stabilization
adipose fin- a precaudal flow sensor?
Shapes of fins and their roles?
rounded
truncated
emarginated
forked
lunate
Rounded – effective acceleration/maneuvering, but high drag, not found in fish that swim
long distance
* Truncated – straight edge, effective for rapid turning and short bursts of speed
* Emarginated – low drag, two lobes
* Forked – reduction in turbulence, 2 lobes
* Lunate – maintain high speed, efficient/low drag
What are the different types of body shape in fish?
Fusiform
Compressiform
Depressiform
Anguilliform
