Q

What are the function of the specific fins?
Dorsal
pectoral
pelvic
anal
adipose

A
  • Dorsal – balance/stabilization, sudden direction changes
  • Pectoral – paired fins, directional changes, aid swimming and directional changes
  • Pelvic – deceleration (brakes)
  • Anal – stabilization
adipose fin- a precaudal flow sensor?

Q

Shapes of fins and their roles?
rounded
truncated
emarginated
forked
lunate

A

Rounded – effective acceleration/maneuvering, but high drag, not found in fish that swim
long distance
* Truncated – straight edge, effective for rapid turning and short bursts of speed
* Emarginated – low drag, two lobes
* Forked – reduction in turbulence, 2 lobes
* Lunate – maintain high speed, efficient/low drag
