Oxygen System Drill: POB Operation
Scenario: “A Guest is experiencing a medical condition that requires the use of a POB. Retrieve the POB,
activate it, and demonstrate how you would use it on the ill Guest.”

*** NOTE: During the POB drill, F/A may begin with either the use of the Single Outlet POB, or the Dual Outlet
POB. Following the completion of the initial portion of the drill, the F/A must demonstrate proficiency in using the second type of POB. **

Action:
• Don gloves and retrieve POB. Use carrying strap.
• Request another F/A to notify the Flight Deck and contact MedLink.
• Activate POB (take the mask out of the pocket and plastic packaging prior to turning the POB on):
• Single Outlet POB: Turn the ON/OFF regulator knob counterclockwise until “4” is clearly displayed in the
viewing window.
• Dual Outlet POB: Turn the ON/OFF knob fully counterclockwise and then back a ¼ turn.
• Check for flow by ensuring the green flow indicator on the reservoir bag inflates.
• Verify oxygen is odorless and colorless.
• Wipe the Guest’s nose and mouth with a non-alcohol wipe or tissue (verbally state and physically demonstrate).
• Place mask over Guest’s nose and mouth and tighten straps as necessary.
• Secure POB in front of the bar under Guest seat with two seatbelt extensions.
• Ensure the gauge is visible from the aisle.

Instructor will ask:
– How often should you check on Guest condition and PSI of POB?
Flight Attendant response:
– Every 10 minutes
Instructor will ask:
– What PSI must we ensure the POB does not fall below?
Flight Attendant Response:
– Ensure POB does not fall below 500 PSI
Instructor will ask:
– Guest is feeling better and no longer needs the POB, what will you do?
Flight Attendant will demonstrate the following:
– Remove the mask from the Guest
– Remove the bottle from below the seat and don it
– Turn POB off
– Disconnect the used oxygen mask, place it in an airsick bag, and discard it in the galley trash cart prior to
returning the POB to its original stowage
– Return POB (no mask attached) to original stowage location after use
Instructor will state:
– You need to use the POB following a rapid decompression. Please connect a new mask to the POB.
Flight Attendant will demonstrate the following:
– Connect a new mask to the POB:
• Single Outlet – to the adjustable flow outlet
• Dual Outlet – to the HI flow outlet

Instructor will state:

– Activate the second type of POB
– Turn POB off
– Disconnect the used mask
– Connect a new mask to the POB
