Capillary blood
Clots easily, oozes from wound slowly
Venous blood
Dark red or maroon, slower and steadier, and easier to control. P
Methods for controlling bleeding
Direct pressure, elevation, pressure bandage, pressure points
First degree burn
- Least severe
- only involves top layer of skin
- leaves skin red or discolored
Second degree burns
- involves injury to top layers of both dermis and epidermis
- skin blisters, is red or has mottled appearance and will swell
Third degree burn
- most severe burn
- involves all 3 layers of skin
- skin has white or charred appearance
- can be life threatening
Fracture
Break in a bone
- closed or simple, no open wound on skin
- open or compound, open wound on skin
Dislocation
End of bone is either displaced from a joint or moved out of its normal position within a joint
Sprain
Injury to tissues surrounding a joint; usually occurs when the part is forced beyond normal range of movement
Strain
Over stretching of a muscle caused by over exertion or lifting
Arterial blood
Bright red, spurts, life threatening and must be contained
