Chapter 14- Infection Control Flashcards
Parts of the chain of infection
- Causative agent
- Reservoir
- Portal of exit
- Mode of transmission
- Portal of entry
- Susceptible host
Chain of infection
Conditions that must be met for disease to occur and spread from one individual to another
Asepsis
Absence of disease producing microorganisms or pathogens
Sterile
Free from all organisms
Contaminated
Organisms and pathogens are present
Common aseptic techniques
Hand washing, good personal hygiene, use of gloves, proper cleaning of instruments and the environment
The most important method used to practice aseptic technique
Hand washing
Main ways pathogens are spread
Blood and body fluids
Levels of aseptic control
- Antisepsis, prevent growth but not effective against viruses, e.g. alcohol and betadine
- Disinfection, destroys or kills pathogenic organisms, e.g bleach
- Sterilization, destroys all microorganisms, e.g. autoclave
3 pathogens of major concern
Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, HIV
PPE
Personal protective equipment, gloves, gowns, Lab coats, masks and face shields
Infection Control
How disease is transmitted and the main ways to prevent disease transmission
