define impulse control disorders
problems in the self-control of emotions and behaviors, behaviors violate rights of others and/or conflict with societal norms, continue despite adverse consequences, relay they have little control, anxiety or craving is experienced prior to the behavior and relief or satisfaction is reaped from completing the behavior
define intermittent explosive disorder
recurrent baseless behavioral outbursts of verbal and/or physical aggression against people or things that are grossly out of proportion to triggering stressor
IED behavior patterns
frequent outbursts that cause no damage twice weekly for 3 months
rare (>3x/yr) outbursts that cause damage to people, animals, or things
what lab results are consistent with impulsiveness and aggression?
low serotonin lvls in CSF
tx of IED (intermittent explosive disorder)
SSRIs, anticonvulsants, lithium, CBT
define Kleptomania
failure to resists uncontrollable urges to steal that aren’t needed or perhaps worth much/anything, there’s increased tension prior to theft which is released after theft is carries out, post-theft feelings include depression and intense guilt, objects given or thrown away, returned, or hoarded
how many shoplifters may have kleptomania?
as many as 24%

define pyromania
impulse to start fires to relieve tension with feelings of gratification afterwards, must have at least two deliberate episodes, pt is interested in fire, no malintent behind episodes
ddx for pyromania
conduct disorder, manic episodes, antisocial PD

nothing definite, CBT, antipsychotics or antidepressants
