Q

First aid for burns, scalds and sunburn:

A

Do not try to pull off material that is stuck to the skin. Hold the burned area under clean, cold, running water for about 15 minutes or put it in a bowl of cold water. When the area has cooled down cover it with a non-fluffy and non-sticky dressing. Never put ice, butter or margarine on burns. Never pop any blisters

Q

First aid for bleeding:

A

Ask the person to put pressure on the wound with their hand. Wear gloves to prevent infection. If it is a small cut wash it and put a plaster on it. If it is a big wound place a pad of gauze on it and wrap it in a bandage. Keep the wound raised and get help

First aid for stings and bites:

A

Remove the sting without squeezing it as you will force more poison into the person. Cover the area with a clean dressing. Go to the clinic or doctor if the person is battling to breathe

Q

First aid for choking:

A

Encourage the patient to cough up the object. If that doesn’t work, try putting one hand on the patient’s chest and slapping them firmly between the shoulder blades. If that doesn’t work either, stand behind them and link your arms around their abdomen. Pull sharply upwards and towards you. Try this several times and then try slapping again
