What are the guidelines behind the “21 Foot Guideline”?
- The average officer can draw, from a level two holster, and fire one unsighted shot in 1.5 seconds.
- The average suspect can cover 21’ between 1.5 and 1.7 seconds ( The slowest at 2.5 seconds)
- Always try and put an obstacle between you and the suspect (i.e., a table, chair, vehicle, ect.)
What is the goal of “Tactical Use of Cover”?
- Minimizing your exposure to the threat
- Maximizing your ability to protect yourself and take the action necessary to successfully end the situation.
What is the difference between cover and concealment?
Cover:
- Provides protection from oncoming fire.
- Can deteriorate rapidly and should be considered “consumable”. It may stop one or two rounds but not multiple rounds. Be ready to move if you have to.
Concealment:
- Hides all parts of the body but does not provide protection from incoming rounds.
- Concealment should be considered temporary, use it as you move to cover.
What is the best way to utilize cover?
- Keep distance between you and your cover. You don’t need to “hug” the cover for it to be effective.
- Don’t extend your weapon be on the cover. You don’t know what’s on the other side.
What is important to remember when shooting around or over cover?
- Shooting around exposes less of you but decreases your view.
- Shooting over exposes more of your body while increasing your view.
What is the primary purpose of criminal justice firearms training?
- To protect human life

- Bullet

What is the maximum range of a bullet?
The greatest distance that the bullet can travel.
What is the maximum effective range of a bullet?
The greatest distance at which the weapon and the shooter can expect to fire with accuracy.
What is the typical maximum range for a handgun round?
Approximately 1800 yards or one mile.
What are the basic components of a semi automatic handgun?
- Frame
- Slide
- Barrel

What are the safe unloading procedures for a semi automatic handgun?
- Remove magazine
- Clear the chamber
- Visually inspect
- Check at least 3 times
