Fire protection systems Flashcards
In what area of an aircraft would you find carbon monoxide detectors
CO2 detectors are commonly used to check for the presence of carbon monoxide gas in aircraft cabins in cockpits. They are place where they are easily visible
What color are the CO2 detectors change when the carbon monoxide fumes are present
The packet which is yellow silicaThat is within the fire detector When air containing carbon monoxide is drawn through the tube or packet the silica turns green
What are two types of smoke detectors
Photoelectric and Visual
Where are smoke detectors use in the aircraft
They are commonly used in cargo and baggage compartment’s and laboratories
How Are thermal switch is wired in thermal switch fire detection systems
The switches are wired in parallel with each other, but in series with a warning light
Describe the operating principle of a thermal switch fire detection system
Contains one or more lights, which are energized by aircraft power when connected to the circuit by a thermal switch. The Thermal switches are heat Sensitive units to complete the circuit at a certain temperature
Describe the operating principle of a continuous loop fire detection system
Consist of one or more wires, embedded and a special ceramic core inside of a conductive tube. In case of a fire or overheat condition, the ceramic or resistance drops, allowing current to flow between the signal wire and the conductive tube, lighting a warning light
How does a thermal couple fire detection system differ from a thermal switch system
Thermal couple depends upon the rate of temperature rise and will not give a warning when the engine overheats slowly or a short circuit develops
What are two types of fire extinguishing systems
High rate of discharge system uses Halon all classes a fire
Conventional fire systems use carbon dioxide and are affective on B and C class fires
What type extinguishing agent is usually found in a HDR System
Halogenated Hydrocarbons boosted by high-pressure dry nitrogen. Halon 1301 Sometimes referred to as Freon 13
What type of extinguishing agent is usually associated with a conventional type extinguishing system
Contain CO2 but may use any other adequate agent
What is the purpose of the yellow disc in a CO2 fire extinguishing System
System discharge indicator disk, indicates which bank of fire bottles have been emptied through normal discharge
How can you determine the charge of a CO2 extinguisher
By weighing it
In turbine engine Freon ( halon) fire extinguishing systems how are bottles discharged
Buy an explosive discharge cartridge (squib) which is detonated electrically, breaking the frangible disc
How is a Freon fire extinguishing system protected from temperature rise in excess of set limits
A thermal fuse that will melt at high temperature conditions and will blow the red discharge indicator disc
