The fire protection system provides fire detection and extinguishing capabilities
for:
(1) Engines and pylons
(2) APU
(3) Cargo Compartments
(4) Lavatories
ENGINE FIRE EXTINGUISHER HANDLE
PULL: closes the associated engine bleed air, fuel and hydraulic shutoff valves.
ROTATE (left/right):discharges fire extinguisher bottles into the associated engine.

Momentary action pushbutton:
Closes the APU fuel shutoff valve and discharges the APU fire extinguisher bottle.

CARGO FIRE DETECTION/EXTINGUISHER BUTTON (GUARDED)
Momentary action pushbutton:
(a) According to the system logic, discharges the high and low-rate cargo extinguisher bottles of the associated cargo compartment when the button is lit.
(b) Pressing the pushbutton when it is not illuminated arms the associated extinguisher bottle and the button illuminates red.

FIRE DETECTION SYSTEM TEST BUTTON
Momentary action button:
(a) Tests the cargo smoke, engine and APU fire detection systems.
(b) If the button is pressed for more than 10 seconds the APU automatically shuts down.

Engine Fire Handle
(1) Anytime the fire handle is pulled it commands the following shutoff valves to close:
(a) the engine fuel shutoff valve;
(b) the engine hydraulic shutoff valves and;
(c) the engine bleed air shutoff valve.

APU FIRE DETECTION
The APU Fire Detection System is comprised of two detectors loops.

When the APU FIRE EXTINGUISHER button is pressed the system:
(1) discharges the APU fire bottle.
(2) shuts down the APU through the APU FADEC.
(3) closes the APU fuel shutoff valve (SOV).
(4) displays an EICAS ADVISORY message APU FIREX BTL DISCH.

As soon as the APU EMER STOP pushbutton is pressed, the red striped bar is replaced by the white striped bar, indicating that the APU has shut
down. After the APU EMER STOP pushbutton is pressed, the APU fire extinguisher pushbutton illuminates entirely red. Pressing the pushbutton,
discharges the extinguishing bottle. The APU fire extinguisher pushbutton illumination turns OFF when the fire input from the APU fire detectors
disappears
on ground, the APU will automatically shut down __ seconds after the fire condition is present.

CARGO COMPARTMENT SMOKE DETECTION
Each cargo compartment has an independent smoke detection system.
The forward cargo compartment has __smoke detectors.
The aft cargo compartment has ___smoke detectors.

After fire or smoke is detected in the forward cargo compartment the following actions are automatically commanded by the system:
1 Air circulation fan is turned off;
2 The FWD fire extinguishing bottle is armed and
3 The forward cargo compartment ventilation outflow valve is commanded closed.
Aft Cargo Compartment
After fire or smoke is detected in the aft cargo compartment the following action is automatically commanded by the system:
The AFT fire extinguishing bottle is armed.
The Cargo Fire Extinguishing System is comprised of:
(1) One high-rate extinguisher bottle and;
(2) One low-rate extinguisher bottle.

LAVATORY FIRE EXTINGUISHING
A. The Fire Extinguishing System consists of one fire-extinguisher bottle installed on each lavatory waste container.
B. When the temperature inside the waste container exceeds a certain limit, the system AUTOMATICALLY discharges the extinguishing agent.

CAUTION: IF THE FIRE DETECTION TEST BUTTON IS
PRESSED FOR ___SECONDS, THE APU WILL SHUTDOWN.

When the TEST button on the fire protection panel is pressed, it initiates the following:
2 aural tones
2 master caution
6 overhead panel lights
7 EICAS
in the aft cargo, smoke must be detected by 2 independent smoke detectors for an alarm to be reported

in forward cargo, if smoke is detected by one detector, the air circulation fan is shut down for 60 seconds and the remaining smoke detectors are monitored for 45 seconds. if another detector goes into alarm within the 45 seconds only then a cargo forward smoke enunciated.
