Summary
In tropical America, cattle ranching is one of the most widespread and unsustainable uses of the land
An oversimplified agroecosystem and bad land management practices are some of the causes.
A new approach to cattle production based on complex agroforestry systems –known as silvopastoral systems- is showing promise for its potential to deliver productive, social and environmental benefits.
SPS are knowledge and management intensive, and are not a ‘one size fits all’ solution. Thus participatory approaches are needed to further develop the systems, as well as to successful scale them up
