Final Study Guide Q1 Flashcards
Types of nonprobability sampling strategies
Nonprobability sampling(i.e. homeless)
-available subjects
-Purposive(judgemental)-small sample picked by researcher on basis of their grouping or knowledge(i.e. political parties
Snowball sampling- people interviewed suggest others for interviewing.
Quota-matrix or table used to control the distribution of characteristics.
What is the chief difference between descriptive and inferential statistics?
Descriptive-Describing parameters
Inferential-drawing infrences from parameters to get statistic
Parameter is to population what statistic is to what?
Sample.
A parameter describes true value calculated from population.
Statistic is an estimated measurement of a sample.
What is the basic principle behind probability sampling?
In order to provide useful dewcriptions of the total population, a sample must exist with the same variations. Different methods can be used.
A sample will be representative of the population if all members have an equal chance of being selected for a sample.
What is the list of elements from which a probability sample is drawn?
Families, social clubs, or corporations.
What are the other terms associated with populations and samples?
Sampling unit-the elements considered for selection
Parameter-summary description of a given variable
Sampling error-Degree of error to be expected
Sampling frame-should be representative
Types of probability sampling strategies
EPSEM-equal probability of selection method
PPS-Probability proportionate to size
Simple random sampling-assigned numbers and random generated
Systematic sampling- kth number of sample is chosen. For example every 25th person.
