Final Review Flashcards
What are the four primary fields of Anthropology?
- Cultural Anthropology
- Physical Anthropology
- Linguistic Anthropology
- Archaeology
What is Cultural Anthropology?
The study of modern/living societies.
(Suspending judgment and seeking to understand another culture.)
What is the Field of Anthropology?
The study of material culture people leave behind including tools, food, and shelters.
(We focus on the materials left behind to study past civilizations.)
What is Linguistic Anthropology?
The study of human language.
(Only humans have complex, symbolic language.)
What is Physical Anthropology?
The study of human evolution.
(How did we evolve, how did we adapt, what does it mean to be “human”?)
Differentiate between
1. Medical Anthropology
2. Bio-Medical Anthropology
- The study of how culture influences our health.
- The study of how our biology influences our health.
What is Pleiotrophy?
A single gene affects multiple (often unrelated) traits.
What are Polygenic Traits? Give an example.
A single trait is affected by multiple genes.
(ex. hair color)
What is Phenylketonuria?
This is PKU. A disease of too much of the amino acid phenylalanine in the blood. Requiring a special diet for treatment.
What is a Protein?
An enzyme that speeds up biological processes. (A catalyst!)
Differentiate between:
1. Quantitative Traits (non-discrete)
2. Qualitative Traits (discrete)
Give an example for both!
- These traits are continuous and variable to change. These can be measured on a scale.
(ex. height, weight) - These are traits that are discontinuous and either are or aren’t.
(ex. wrinkled or non-wrinkled pea plants)
What yourself through the process of Protein Synthesis.
- Transcription (DNA is copied into mRNA in the nucleus)
- Translation (mRNA is translated into amino acids/proteins to be used by the body)
