final lecture 5 Flashcards
osteoporosis contributing factors
genetics, diet, lifestyle, hormones, diseases, meds
bone mineral density is commonly expressed as
T score which compares to average
normal BMD
T score between +1 & -1
osterpenia
T score between -1 & -2.5
osteoporosis
t score <2.5
OP is more common in
women
heterogenous disease divided into 3 categories
postmenopausal, age-related, secondary
most common secondary cause
glucocorticoid therapy
bone remodeling
breakdown & renewal of bone; requires 3-4 months to complete
osteoclasts
degrade bone
acid pH dissolves hydroxyapatite crystals
enzymes degrade the collagen & other extracellular fibers
osteoblasts
build bone
secrete OSP->inhibits osteoclasts
postmenopausal OP
due to increased bone resorption due to estrogen deficiency
secondary causes of Op
glucocorticoids, heparin, TH, anticonvulsants, disease
kyphosis
exaggerated posterior curvature of the thoracic spin(round back)
associate w/ respiratory & GI complcations
lordosis
exaggerated anterior curvature of the lumbar & cervical regions of the spine
