soldier who died 1 week before the end of World War I. Wrote many poems during the war. Important because his poems showed the growing cultural pessimism that Europeans felt

Poetry that puts random words together, nonsense. Shows the chaos that many Europeans felt in the nonsensical world

Fictional representations of external and internal realities. Art is superior to science. Shows non linear time

French writer, everyone is alone but art is where the individual consciousness can be formed and everyone can relate to something about the art. Important because it shows how artists can construct experiences that speaks to an audience. (twenty one pilots)
Joyce
French Writer that contributed to the modern avant garde movement. Important by how he expanded time. He wrote a book on all of his thoughts in one day
Pink Decade
Decade where you had to choose a political philosophy to agree with. Fascism or Liberalism
Left Hegelianism
Studying fascism from America. Anti-Stalinism. Important because it talks about the problem of alienation, when people are alienated they tend to be drawn towards authoritarian figures.
Gramsci
Italian theorist arrested by Mussolini who argued for an Anti-Stalinist form of communism. Left Hegelianism. Important because he created idea that the gov. should not impose people on belief on people but instead listen to them
Exisentialism
explores human existence through experience and sexual encounters
Satre
existential writer who said existence exceeds essence. Important because he went against Marxism and said you define yourself by actions not spiritual essence. Individual freedom
Simone de Beauvioir
French existentialist who said power of sexism was left out of existentialism. Important because she started 2nd wave feminism which was concerned with the social dimension of feminism (family structures and job types)
Levi-Strauss
A Jewish philosopher that was interested in defining cultures in other parts of the world like Brazil, which he traveled to and spent time with the villagers there. Important because he said structure of language defines thoughts, also was structuralist = went against existentialism, said there is constant binary opposition
