Final: Fluorine (F) Flashcards
Is F regarded as an essential dietary component?
No
What are the functions of F when ingested in SMALL amounts?
Prevention of dental caries; helps enamel resist acid and inhibits bacterial growth around tooth
Also strengthens all bone (subs in bone crystal for OH-)
How readily is NaF absorbed by cattle?
Rapidly and nearly completely absorbed
What substances can reduce F absorption?
Dietary Ca, Al, NaCl, and fat
How can F toxicity occur?
Animals grazing down wind of aluminum smelters, rock phosphate sources high in F
What are symptoms of F toxicity?
Weakens bones and causes osteonecrosis - stunts bone formation
What are sources of F?
Stannous (tin) F from human toothpaste
Not added to animal diets to any great degree
