Final: Chromium (Cr) Flashcards
What is the function of Cr?
Stabilizes insulin and facilitates its interaction with receptors in tissues.
Where is Cr primarily absorbed?
small intestine
What are naturally occurring sources of Cr?
Brewer’s yeast (high bioavailability)
What are inorganic sources of Cr?
CrCl3, Cr2O3
Poorly absorbed but bioavailability increases when complexed with organic compounds (chromium proprionate, chromium picolinate).
What does Cr deficiency cause and why?
hyperglycemia; glucose tolerance factor is inactive
What is the benefit of Cr supplementation in pigs?
May improve number of piglets born and may also improve leanness of growing pigs
What is the benefit of Cr supplementation in cows?
Increased milk production
What is the toxicity of Cr+3 and what are some symptoms?
Relatively non-toxic;
allergic dermatitis from green tattoo ink, some jewelry
What is the toxicity of Cr+6 and what are the symptoms?
HIGHLY toxic;
Depresses mitochondrial function
What form of chromium in the diet is biologically available?
Brewer’s yeast, Cr complexed with organic compounds
