Essay Question

What is the central place theory in urban geography? Based on the marketing principle, what is the relationship between the size of a large central place and that of a medium central place?

A

The central place theory ultimately deals with uniform distribution. There is a pattern of independent small, medium, and larger towns that together could provide goods and services needed by a dispersed rural population. The smaller towns serve as marketplaces for frequently required “low-order” commodities and services, while expensive “high-order” luxury goods would be available only in large communites that were central to surrounding small towns. (Examples of the high-order goods are expensive cars/jewlery and speacialty doctors/surgeons).
The model shows a “nesting” of complementary regions in which part or all multiple lower service areas are contained within the market area of a higher-order center.
The relationship between the sixe of a large central place and that of a medium central place is 1+ 6 x 1/3 = 3.

-The German geographer Walter Christaller developed the central place theory to explain the observed settlement size and spacing regularities.

Video Reflection Question

What is a favela in Rio de Janeiro? Why are favelas negelected neighborhoods?
What are the two main factors that fueled the development of favelas?
What are the major social problems in the favelas?

A

A favela is an informal community in Ria de Janeiro. Favelas are home to vicious drug dealers, and some very peaceful creative people. Twenty-five percent of Rio’s population lives in favelas. Favelas are created without any plans or notices from the city, hence the term “informal,” and hence why the are often negelcted neighborhoods.

That Rio was home to many slaves from Brazil, which are the very people who built up these favela communities, is fuel factor number one. Massive migrations in modern times continue to fuel the development of favelas.

Drug gangs are very large in favelas. This causes some disfunction and fear in the people. There are also social problems because of pacification (police being brought in to run gangs out) because it works for some favelas, but it unfortunately does not work for other favelas. So there is definitely social tension among police and drug dealer gangs
