Final: Assistive Tech Pt 2 Flashcards
What is DME?
Equipment and supplies ordered by a health care provider for everyday or extended use
What is CRT?
Include products that are medically necessary, individually configured devices that require evaluation, configuration, fitting, adjustment, or programming
What do you need to identify when assessing for wheeled mobility?
What are the individual’s specific needs in an area and what goals or outcomes can be developed from identified needs
What are the three main components of a wheeled mobility examination?
- Mat assessment
- Assessment in a trial device
- Environmental assessment
What is a mat assessment?
Flexible vs rigid deformities and impairments, functional limitations
What is a K0001?
Standard wheelchair
What is a K0002?
Standard Hemi Height Wheelchair
What is a K0003?
Lightweight wheelchair
What is a K0004?
High strength, lightweight wheelchair
What are examples of DME?
K0001, K0002, K0003, K0004
What are examples of CRT?
Tilt in space and K0005
What is a tilt-in-space?
Dependent manual wheelchair
What is a K0005?
Ultra lightweight wheelchair
What standard manual wheelchair has very minimal adustability?
K0001 and K0002
What standard manual wheelchair has minimal adjustability?
K0003
What standard manual wheelchair has the most basic adjustability?
K0004
What standard manual wheelchair has variable adjustability?
Tilt-in-space
What standard manual wheelchair is the most customizable?
K0005
What wheelchairs are indicated for short term use?
K0001, K0002, K0003, K0004
What wheelchairs are indicated for long term use?
K0005, tilt-in-space
Generally describe K0001-K0003 chairs
Heavier, basic manual wheelchairs with minimal adjustability and are most appropriate for short-term use
What is the standard seat height from the floor for a standard wheelchair?
18 - 20”
What is the standard seat height from the floor for a hemi wheelchair and why?
17.5 - 18.5” to allow for self propulsion with LE
When would a pt qualify for a K0004?
Qualify for a basic manual wheelchair, but requires a seat width, depth, or height that can’t be accommodated by a basic chair
How long will a pt with a K0004 chair spend in the chair, and what is their functional ability?
Will use a wheelchair more than two hours per day, and they are unable to perform all ALDs efficiently in a basic chair
How is qualification for a K0005 established?
Functionally, not based on diagnosis
What will justification for a K0005 include?
Ruling out why a lower level chair will not meet the pt needs and a description of the client’s routine activities and whether they are fully independent in the use of their chair
When would a tilt-in-space chair be appropriate?
Dependent for mobility, unable to perform independent pressure relief, requires gravity-assisted positioning, requires postural support, goal is to increase sitting tolerance, improved sight due to forward head posture, will benefit from trunk support for respiratory function, requires safe positioning for gravity-assisted swallowing
What are three conditions that will lead to justifying a power wheeledchair?
- Unable to propel manual chair
- Home has adequate access
- Use will significantly improve ability to perform MRADLs
What is the most basic and least adjustable powered mobility option?
Scooters
What would lead to ruling out a scooter?
Poor trunk strength, difficulty with transfers, poor endurance, existing postural abnormalities, large turning radius
What are the 5 characteristics of a group 1 powered wheelchair?
- Most basic
- Narrower turning radius than scooter
- No postural abnormalities or risk for pressure injury
- Basic seating with no extra stability or protection
- No power seat functions
What are the 6 characteristics of a group 2 powered wheelchair?
- Characterized by “captain’s seating”
- Unable to safely transfer, operate, and maintain postural stability in scooter
- Home does not have adequate access for operating scooter
- Pt able to safely operate or have a caregiver willing to operate
- Improve ability to participate in MRADLs
- Can include tilt, recline, or ventilator mounted
What is the additional criteria for a group 3 powered wheelchair?
Pt has a neurological condition, myopathy, congenital skeletal deformity
What are the 5 benefits of a group 3 chair compared to a group 2 chair?
- Allow integration of rehab seating, better wheel suspension
- Multiple drive control options
- Option of power tilt, recline, legs, elevate
- Greater obstacle climb and battery
- Tighter turning radius, increased speed
What are the two additional criteria for a group 4 powered wheelchair?
- Improved suspension to minimize pain and triggers of spasticity when driving
- Requires stable base to safely use functions of seat elevation and standing
What three characteristics are included in a group 4 chair than a group 3 chair?
- Designed for stability to accommodate power tilt, recline, elevating legs, standing
- Suspension designed for multiple terrains and can decrease transmission of bumps and vibration
- Batteries last longer
What are the thee options for power wheelchair controls?
Joystick, head switch, sip and puff
