When does the final approach begin?
FAF
Glideslope intercept point (zig zag arrow)
When does the final approach end?
MAP
MAP for precision approach?
DA (you will follow glidepath gradient until you reach the DA as indicated by your altimeter)
non-precision MAP?
Descend to MDA and level off
Continue toward the MAP until you hit the VDP
MAP identified by timing from FAF or DME
Using DME hold
Tune the frequency of facility providing DME
Press DME hold
tune localizer frequency
(this happens if facility doesn’t have their own DME and you need to use a nearby vortac to tell you when you’re at the FAF)
ILS rules for glideslope deviation
more than 1 dot below or 2 above = you can’t descent lower than the published localizer MDA (you must recapture it before descent)
ILS rules for Course deviations
2 dot deflection of the CDI occurs on final approach = you must discontinue and execute missed approach
LOC approach
non-precision aka no glideslope. you may or may not have DME (so you may have to use DME hold)
VOR approach
Using CDI as guideline (1 dot deflection = 5 degrees off course)
FAF might be:
station passage
radial/DME fix
no designated FAF (VOR located on airfield)
