What is prudence?
consults well about the means to be used for leading a good life and applies the knowledge acquired through consultation to particular contingencies as they arise (prudence is right reason as directing human acts)
How is prudence associated w/ other moral virtues?
establishes the mean in moral virtues, by deciding in what manner and by what means man shall obtain the mean of reason in his deeds. For though the attainment of the mean is the end of a moral virtue, yet this mean is found by the right disposition of these things that are directed to the end. E.g. Fortitude- Speculatively considered should not stray from right judgment through fear or daring. Prudence directs the attainment of this virtue by ordering the means in a particular concrete instance. It decides the right manner and means for achieveing the known end.
What is justice?
rectitude of the W towards the rights of others
What is Commutative justice?
virtue whereby man renders to each one, with a constant and perpetual will, what is his exact due in the exchanges that can take place between two individuals.
What is Distributive Justice?
virtue by which society or it?s head distributes goods and burdens among it?s members according to the merit, dignity, and need of each
What is restitution?
act by which a return of property is made to him who has been deprived of it or by which an unjust damage is made good.(i.e. w/o consent of owner)
When is restitution made?
Made as soon as morally possible and only when damage results from a sinful will to cause harm
How does epikeia relate to justice?
1) Corresponds (complies w/ lawgiver), contained under (comply w/ letter of law), exceeds (condivided) legal justice 2) highest form of justice

What are the various precepts of Justice given by STA?
First Three: acts of religion, love of God FOURTH: acts of piety SIX thru TEN: acts of justice / all relate to something due. Religion is principal part of justice, piety is second principal part of justice, common justice deals w/ equality
How is piety, as a Gift of the Holy Ghost, related to the virtue of justice?
Unifies and perfects the entire content of justice. Pervades the enitre order of man’s social action, giving new meanting to the precepts and obligation of justice. Piety disposes man and enables him to be moved by the Holy Ghost as to look upon and to reverence God as his Father of all men. Transformed by charity and piety, a Christian honors the rights of God and men, never resting until the demands of justice are satisfied.
Explain how STA place virtue of religion above others?
occupies central position between the other moral virtues. Acts of MVs are incomplete and imperfect unless unified and commanded by religion.
How is C related to P?
C & P are concerned w/ means for an end. When faced w/ burden of making judgement concerning singular act usually necessary for mind to take counsel. C is necessary preamble to the action of a prudent man.
How is epikeia related to P& J?
Considers the common good and extends good of community
