What was Shan civilization?
First historic, urban civilization in northern China. (6000 kya).
What is a shang oracle bone?
Scapulimancy. The process of divining the future in which the scapulae of animals are burned. The pattern of breakage is “read” by a diviner.
What are some northern china burials?
Royal graves, chariot burials. These were burials with the royal person(s) and their sacrificial victims.
What was the Terracotta Army?
221 B.C. The terracotta army is part of the burial complex of qin shihaung. Thousands of soldiers, about 300 horses.
Who was qin shihaung?
Founder of the chin dynasty. Established a centralized powerful government. Standardized currency. Standardized weights, measures and written language. The terracotta army is buried 1 km from his burial mound.
What civilization lived in the indus valley?
Harappan Civilization.
Where is the Indus Valley now?
Located in present day Pakistan and India in the Indus River floodplain and surrounding area.
How long ago can you find the roots of the Indus civilization?
8, 500 kya. Farming settlements reveal evidence of larger, permanent dwellings and communal grain storage facilities.
What are found in these urban centres? (harappa & dohenjo-daro)
Standardized production of bricks, figurines, artwork, etc.
How are the centres organized?
In two parts, the citadel (public buildings, etc) and the lower parts which include the commoners, workshops etc. NO evidence for areas dedicated to “rulers” or “leaders.”
What is the mohenjo-daro great bath?
A large waterproof pool structure that is thought to have been involved in ritual bathing.
What are cubical weights?
Stone weights produced in standard sizes that are found throughout the harappan river valley. They were probably used to help weigh trade materials. (They would be used with a scale).
What are the harappans known for?
Manufacturing of stone beads and jewelry artifacts. Also standardized pottery vessels. Also figurines.
