Filovirus structure?
filamentous, enveloped, -ssRNA
Replication
binds: Niemann-Pick C1 (NPC1)
T-cell immunoglobulin and mucin domain 1 (TIM-1)
Replicates in cytoplasm
Epidemiology
in Africa, rare cases outside africa.
Ebola symptoms
Day 7-9: headache, fatigue, fever, muscle soreness
Day 10: sudden high fever, vomiting blood, passive behavious
Day 11: bruising, brain damage, bleeding from nose, mouth, eyes anus.
Day 12: internal bleeding, death
Diagnosis
HANDLE WITH EXTREME CARE
requires level 4 isolation (not routinely available)
can be detected in tissue by IF, influids by ELISA, RT-PCR genome in secretions.
treatment
antibody containing serum, artificial antibody, ribavirin.
infected patients quarantined. Contaminated animals sacrificed.
