- p 379. BUILDING A GLOBAL FIELD LAYOUT. Now that you’ve finished the new TOG and hooked up its relationships, you’re ready to:
create the ASSIGN LINE ITEMS TO EXPENSE Layout. WITH THE GRAPH DEFINED, THIS PROCESS IS SURPRISINGLY SIMPLE.
- How do you build the ASSIGN LINE ITEMS TO EXPENSE layout?
Create a NEW, BLANK layout based on the Assign Expenses__EXPENSES Table Occurrence and call it ASSIGN LINE ITEMS TO EXPENSES.
- The SECOND step for creating the ASSIGN LINE ITEMS TO EXPENSES Layout is:
Add the fields to the layout:
a. Assign Expenses__EXPENSES::Expense
b. Assign Expenses__EXPENSES::Global Invoice ID
c. Assign Expenses__EXPENSES:: Line Item ID
d. Assign Expenses__JOB::Name
e. Assign Expenses__LINE ITEMS:: Description
- Remember that this Layout is associated with the Assign Expenses__EXPENSES TO, so when you choose the fields for the layout, select:
the CURRENT TABLE from the top of the pop up menu in the SPECIFY FIELD dialog box.
- By definition, a GLOBAL FIELD HAS THE SAME VALUE IN ALL ITS TABLE’S RECORDS, so changing the data in a GLOBAL FIELD:
has NO EFFECT on any of your “REAL” data for those records.
- When your GLOBAL FIELD is used in a relationship, and you change the value IN THE GLOBAL FIELD;
the RELATIONSHIP CHANGES and SO DO THE RECORDS THAT ARE RELATED TO YOUR CURRENT RECORD.
- You use the technique from Card #6 to create a:
VALUE LIST that is based on the GLOBAL RELATIONSHIP between your NEW EXPENSES TO and the NEW INVOICE TO.
- When the GLOBAL RELATIONSHIP changes, FileMaker :
TUNNELS in the new TOG from EXPENSES to INVOICES to LINE ITEMS to get the LINE ITEM that’s RELATED THROUGH THE VALUE in your GLOBAL.
