- p 376. CREATING A GLOBAL FIELD. Since the CONTEXT of your INTERFACE is the EXPENSES TABLE, that’s where you add the GLOBAL FIELD. How do you do this?
a. FILE–>MANAGE DATABASE: FIELDS TAB, choose EXPENSES
b. Name the field GLOBAL INVOICE ID, change its TYPE to NUMBER
c. Click OPTIONS, and in the FIELD OPTIONS dialog box, select STORAGE TAB
d. Select “USE GLOBAL STORAGE (One VALUE for ALL records) and click OK
- As a review, WHAT ARE THE GOALS for the NEW LAYOUT?
Its purpose is to SHOW you an INVOICE based on data you enter in a GLOBAL FIELD, and to SHOW the JOB NAME and a LIST OF LINE ITEMS related to that JOB.
- Remember that this TOG is for building the ASSIGN LINE ITEMS TO EXPENSES Layout on p 371. Since it needs the CONTEXT of:
the EXPENSES table, you’ll create a new EXPENSES Table Occurrence.

- Since the ASSIGN LINE ITEMS layout needs the CONTEXT of:
the EXPENSES table, you’ll create a new EXPENSES Table Occurrence.
- You also want to be able to show the LINE ITEMS ATTACHED to that EXPENSE, so you need:
a new LINE ITEMS Table Occurrence
- Finally, you’ll use the GLOBAL FIELD in the EXPENSE table to:
hook up to another TO of the INVOICE table.
- With these TOs, you’ll be able to see and manage the following info:
a. The name of a JOB associated with an Invoice
b. The LINE ITEMS attached to that INVOICE.
- Remember, the NAMING SCHEME (i.e., Assign Expenses__LINE ITEMS) helps you remember:
WHICH TABLE EACH OCCURRENCE needs to come from.
