File Formats Flashcards
file format (container) and codec (compression type)
determines how the computer data is encoded, stored, interpreted by the programs.
exchange format
a data format that can be used in several programs
layout file formats
not generally available as exchange formats, unless the recipient has a compatible version of the program in question
tags
data bytes of a certain length within the data blocks, which contain the image info (measurements, resolutions).
pixel file formats
contain image data in a matrix of image dots (pixels), each pixel allocated certain color coordinates and a color value
bitmap
simplest graphics format, the pixels are defined within a 2-D system of coordinates with an x-y value and a color value (files can be very large)
vector formats
contain a mathematical description of individual objects in an image (lines, circles, polygons). easy to scale.
metafile formats
contain both pixel/vector data (.eps)
encapsulated postscript (.eps)
encoded in PostScript language, often can no longer be modified after saving in a program other than the one that produced them
