Q

how do filament lamps work

A

a coil of very thin tungsten wire is connected to a electrical circuit. when the lamp is connected to an electrical supply passes through the filament heating it up to about 2000 to 3000 celcius. the filament glows white hot emit light and a large amount of heat.

Q

how do fluorescent tubes work

A

a fluorescent tube is a sealed, cylindrical glass tube which contains mercury vapour and has an electrode at each end. the inside is coated with phosphor. when switched on current passes through mercury vapour which emits ultraviolet radiation when this hits the sides of the glass tube its absorbed by the phosphor coating and reemited as visible white light
