Fieldwork Flashcards
What are the 6 stages of fieldwork
- Question/ hyporthesis
- Data collection
- Data presentation
- Data analysis
- Conclusion
- Evaluation
What is the difference between quantitive and qualitive data
Quantitive data: numerical data e.g tally measurement
Qualititive data: non - numerical, opinion based e.g interviews, photos
What is the difference between primary and secondary data
Primary is data you collected yourself whereas secondary is data that somebody else has collected ( e.g a photo )
What are some examples of risks and their mitigations
Slipping on a river bank: enter the river the right way
Getting lost: track your way/ keep a phone with signal
Falling into the river: wear suitable footwear
What does sampling do and how do you carry out each of the samples
Sampling removes bias
Random sampling: use a random number generator
Systematic sampling: collecting data in intervals
Stratified sampling: collecting data from different groups of a population to ensure fair representation
What are the advantages and disadvantages of strat sampling
+:
Useful with large samples
Avoids bias
-: might miss parts
What are the advantages and disadvantages of systematic sampling
+: simple with good coverage
-: may be time consuming
What are the advantages and disadvantages of random sampling
+:
ensures representation of different populations
Flexible
-: hard to establish proportions of sub populations
What are 4 characteristics of swanage
South coast of the UK
In dorset
Most easterly town on the Jurassic coast
Tourist honey pot
What is an example of a hypothesis for Swanage
Hard engineering prevents longshore drift moving sediment at Swanage
Tourism has an environmental impact on swanage
Why is swanage a suitable place to study for field work
We study hard engineering in coasts so it will be beneficial to see theory in real life
Swanage has used coastal management, therefore it is a suitable location to tests it’s effectiveness
Swanage is relatively nearby so it is a suitable location as you can get there and back in a day
What is the method for the groyne dop height survey
Select a random spot on the groyne
Measure the drop from the gop of the groyne to the sand on the South side, repeat this from the North side and read to the nearest cm
Use systematic sampling ( every 3rd groyne )
Repeat 5 times
What were the quantitive and qualititive data for the physical field work
Groyne drop height survey
Photo analysis
What do we test for in evaluation
Validity
Accuracy
Reliability
Why we chose swanage for human fieldwork
We study the impact of tourism so we can see theory in real life
181000 tourists stayed in swanage in 2017 therefore it is a suitable location to assess the environmental impact
No specialist equipment needed so we can easily collect data to answer my hypothesis
