What are some of the most important thing to consider before starting a necropsy?
- Where you are going to dispose of the body
- Are you protected from whatever infectious organisms the animal may contain
What are some important history questions to ask before performing a necropsy?
- When was the last time the animal was seen alive?
- Have any new animals been introduced recently?
- Have any other animals on the property displayed signs of sickness?
What supplies do you need in your necropsy kit?
Knives, Sharpening steel, saws, scissors, scalpel holder/blades, forceps, sterile specimen containers/whirl paks, formalin, PPE
What is the minimum PPE you should have when performing a field necropsy?
Gloves, rubber boots, coveralls
What should you always do before euthanizing the animal if possible?
Collect blood to run serology or other tests
What size should tissue being put into formalin be?
no more than 3-6 cm thick
What tissue types should you collect in a case of clustered abortions?
Placenta, Fetus (if small enough), liver, lung, heart, spleen, brain
