Bovine Restraint Flashcards
What are the different methods of bovine restraint?
Gate, Lariat, Headgate, Chute, Chemical
What should you do if you own 2 cows and no headgate?
Sell one cow to buy the headgate, proper restraint is essential!
Two rules for tying a cow up with rope
Always have a plan of where you are going to tie the animal up and always tie with a quick release knot
What are some advantages and disadvantages to a manual headgate?
Advantages: animals enter much better (hole opens much wider and they can see the cow in front of them leave encouraging forward movement), fits cattle of all sizes
Disadvantages: easier to let animals escape, difficult to work animals alone, physically harder
What are some advantages and disadvantages to a automatic headgate?
Advantages: easier to work alone, more difficult to let animals escape
Disadvantages: automatic is a lie, animals are much less likely to stick head through, cannot have one animal entering while other is exiting, increased likelihood of choking if the animal goes down
T/F: A headgate allows for better access to the animal compared to a headchute
False. The headchute allows for better access and overall restraint due to squeezing ability
What are the benefits to using a tailjack?
It prevents the animal from kicking- be sure the person doing this knows what they are doing as to do it properly requires a lot of force
T/F: the Bud box and the cattle tub system both are low stress handling equipment
True! They both are effective and reduce stress for the animals
