What is fibre ?
It is a type of carbohydrate that helps to keep your digestive system working properly and keeps food moving through it.
What are fibres found in ?
Vegetables - peas, beans, broccoli, carrots and potatoes (especially the skin)
Fruit and fruit juices - raspberrie, prunes, bananas, apples
Brown bread and whole meal or whole grain foods - whole meal bread/rice/pasta/flour
Lentils, beans, seeds and nuts
What happens if you don’t eat fibre ?
It can lead to constipation, bowel and colon cancer, heart disease and high blood pressure.
What does the NHS recommend that the average adult should take in how much fibre per day ?
30g of fibre per day
How much of you body is water ?
Around 60% of your body is water. It’s found in every cell of your body, as well as fluids like
blood, sweat and saliva
Why do our bodies need water ?
- Eliminate waste from the body
- Control body temperature
- Aid the process of digestion
Where do you find water ?
Water, fruit juice, tea, lemonade, etc. It’s also found in food - vegetables and fruit contain quite a lot, even things like bread and meat contain water.
How does our body lose water ?
Sweat
Breath
Urine
Feces
What happens if you do not replace the water you’ve used or lost ?
You become dehydrated and your body can’t work properly
What does dehydration cause ?
- Slower reactions and poor decision- making, as your brain need a water to function well.
- Blood to thicken, making it harder for the heart to pump blood around the body
- An increase in body temperature (the body can’t sweat effectively)
How much water should you drink a day and what could make this amount go up ?
You should drink 2 litres of water a day
But if you’re hot it exercising you need to drink more to get enough water into your system
What problems are caused by drink huge amount of water in a short period of time (over hydration) ?
Headaches, nausea and confusion.
It also dilutes the concentration of nutrients in our blood - this can affect the function of organs like the kidneys, which in some cases can be fatal.
