Fats Flashcards
toHow do fats provide energy ?
They
provide a concentrated source of energy (twice as much energy per gram as proteins and carbs)
How do fats provide nutrients ?
They are a source of fat- so soluble vitamins A,D,E and K
How does fat provide insulation ?
Fat forms an insulating layer under our skin which keeps us warm
How does fat provide protection ?
They insulating layers of fat also protect our bones and organs
What do our bodies use fat to make ?
Our bodies use fat to make cholesterol, which is an essential part of all cell membranes.
What are fats made up of ?
Fats are made up of fatty acids and glycerol in the form of triglycerides
What are fatty acids chains made up of ?
Fatty acid chains are made up if carbon and hydrogen.
What fatty acid only has single c-c bonds ?
Saturated fatty acids
What fatty acid contains at least one C=C double bond in their carbon chain ?
Unsaturated
fatty acids
What are saturated fats ?
They’re solid at room temperature and come from animal sources, but they can also come from plant sources like coconut butter.
Why are unsaturated fats bad for your health ?
Too much saturated fats can increase cholesterol levels in the blood, which increases the risk of coronary heart disease
What are unsaturated fats made?
They’re soft or liquid at ambient temperature and come from vegetables that are high in fat (e.g. flax seeds and peanuts) and vegetable oils (e.g. sunflower, rapeseed and olive oils)
What can unsaturated fats be ?
Monounsaturated and polyunsaturated
What are monounsaturated fats made?
- They contain one C=C double bond in their carbon chains
- They are found in foods such as olive oil, almonds, peanut butter and avocados.
What are polyunsaturated fats ?
Polyunsaturated fats contain more than one. C=C double bond
What foods are examples of monounsaturated fats ?
Olive oil, almonds, peanut butter and avocados
What foods are an example of polyunsaturated ?
Sesame oil, soybean oil, seeds and oily fish
What percent of your diet should fats make up ?
35%
no more than 11% of this should
come from saturated fats
How much fat should an average adult consume in grams ?
70g
no more than 20g of this should come from saturated fat
What does the amount of fat depend on ?
Age and physical activity
What are the consequences of excess fat ?
- Weight gain. Excess fat is stored under the skin and around organs (visceral fats)
- Excess levels of fat lead to obesity, obesity can lead to diet-related issues like type-2 diabetes
- Too much saturated fats can cause a build of cholesterol in the arteries and restricts blood flow around the body. Increasing the risk of high blood pressure, a stroke, a heart attack and coronary heart disease.
What happens if you have a deficiency of fats ?
- A vitamin deficiency in the fat-soluble vitamins. (A, E, D and K)
- Lack of carbohydrates, the body starts to use its fat store for energy. Leading to to weight loss..
- Less insulation
- Thinner layer of protection for vital organs
