Fibre Flashcards
What is fibre?
Fibre is the non-digestible part of plants. As it is not digested it passes through the body providing bulk and helping move waste more efficiently. Fibre can help prevent constipation and other bowel disorders.
What are the two main types of fibre?
Insoluble and Soluble
What are the functions of insoluble fibre?
> Assists digestion by enabling the body to get rid of waste more efficiently.
> Helps prevent constipation by adding bulk to faeces, making them easier to pass.
> It is filling and can reduce the desire to eat between meals, helping to maintain a healthy weight.
What are the functions of soluble fibre?
> Helps keep stool soft and easier to pass as soluble fibre dissolves in water and forms a gel in the digestive system.
> Can help lower blood cholesterol levels, therefore it can reduce the risk of CVD
> Has a positve impact on the control of blood sugar levels, therefore it can help the management of type 2 diabetes.
