Stages of development
Zygote - initial cells formed by two gamete cells joined following fertilisation
Embryo - developing of mass cells from implantation until 8 weeks
Fetus - developing baby after embryonic stage and before birth (9th week)
Week 1
Zygote, morula, blastocyst
Blastocyst differentiates into trophoblast and inner cell mass implantation occurs
Week 2

Week 4 - embryonic period
- heart begins to pump blood

- lungs and gastrointestinal system begin forming
Weeks 5-6
- rapid brain growth
- umbilical cord formed
- limb buds differentiate
- liver begins to function
- reflex response to touch
Week 7
- liver pro inent
- growing intestines herniate out of abdominal cavity into umbilical cord
- eye lids form
- diaphragm develops
Week 8
- hands and feet formed
- 4 chambers to heart (40-60bpm)
- major blood vessels formed
- circulation through umbilical cord
- external genitalia visable
System formation
Urinary - producing and passing urine by 10/40
Gastrointestinal - swallowing amniotic fluid by 16/40
Respiratory - formed by 17-24/40
Eyes and Ear formation
eyes - developed by week 13, eyelids remained fused until week 24
ears - fully formed and functioning by 20/40
Placenta at term
