Fermentation and anaerobic respiration terms Flashcards
alcoholic fermentation
The form of fermentation in which ethanol is produced as a product of NADH oxidation.
anaerobic respiration
The form of cellular respiration in which substances other than molecular oxygen, such as carbon dioxide, sulfate, iron, or nitrate, are used as the terminal electron acceptor.
chemolithotroph
An organism that oxidizes inorganic compounds to yield energy.
facultative anaerobe
An organism that can live in either an aerobic or an anaerobic environment.
fermentation
A biochemical pathway that allows NAD+ to be regenerated from NADH after glycolysis when an electron transport chain is not available. Known pathways include lactic acid fermentation and alcoholic fermentation.
glycolysis
The biochemical process by which glucose is broken down into two molecules of the 3-carbon compound pyruvate.
lactic acid fermentation
The form of fermentation in which lactic acid is produced as a product of NADH oxidation.
obligate aerobe
An organism that can survive and thrive only in the presence of oxygen.
obligate anaerobe
An organism that cannot survive in the presence of oxygen; an oxygen environment may be toxic to some members of this group.
