  • in the middle of the 8th century commercial distillation of liquor began in the arabic part of the world
  • 14th medical use
  • the dutch the first to suceed in refining these early distillates by introducing a second distillation
  • 19th, 1831 irish aeneas coffey patented two column still (increase percentage of alcohol & segregate all waste)

the process

A
  • distil alcoholic fluid (the mash) to seperate alcohol from water
  • alters the flavor & strength of alcohol
  • heated between 78.3° (poiling point of alcohol) and 100°(boiling.point of water) -> alcohol will vaporize while water remains liquid
