Fermentation Flashcards
when will bacteria ferment (2)
- bacteria that do respiration & fermentation will ferment if do not have a TEA for ETC
- those with no fnal ETC will always ferment
how is ATP synthesized by fermentation
SL(P) eg glycolysis
purpose of ADP
keep glycolysis operating. ATP used as source of nrg producing ADP
purpose of NAD+
keep glycolysis operating. NADH will not be oxidized by an ETC. NADH is oxidized by pyruvate or derivative of pyruvate providing the necessary NAD+
why do the products of fermentation vary such as H2, CO2, acids and alcohols
species have diff enzymes for fermentation, therefore diff products.
what happens to products of fermentation
transported out/diffuse out of cell
mixed acid fermentation produce
acids and gases
homofermentative lactate fermentation produce
lactate
heterofermentative lactate fermentation produce
lactate and other products
purpose of phenol red broth
determine if species can ferment a particular carbohydrate and produce acid waste +/- gas
whats in phenol red broth
single fermentable carbohydrate, pH indicator changes from red to yellow in acidic pH, Durham tube to catch any gas
results of phenol red
positive is yellow +/- gas
