A
- CNS Depression - leading to analgesia
- Respiratory depression - leading to apnoea
- Dependence - addiction

A
- Decreases conduction velocity through the AV node

How is it fentanyl metabolised
A
By the liver, excreted by kidneys

what are the primary emergency indications for fentanyl
A
- sedation to facilitate and maintain intubation
- analgesia (pain relief)
- History of hypersensitivity or allergy to morphine
- Known renal impairment/failure
- short duration of action required
- Hypotension
- Nausea/vomiting
- severe headaches

what are the contraindications for fentanyl
A
- Hypersensitivity
2. late 2nd stage labour

what are the precautions for fentanyl
A
- Elderly/frail
- Impaired hepatic function
- Respiratory depression
- Current asthma
- Patients on monoamine oxidase inhibitors
- Known addiction to opioids
- Rhinitis, Rhinorrhea, facial trauma

What are the side effects of fentanyl
A
- Respiratory depression
- apnoea
- Rigidity of the diaphragm and intercostal muscles
- Bradycardia

Onset, peak and duration of fentanyl
A
IV:
Onset = immediate
Peak = less than 5 mins
duration = 30-60 mins
IN:
Peak = 2 minutes
