Colley
Argues that school subject choices are influenced by 3 things : perception of gender roles - socialised into typically masculine or feminine subjects , subject preferences - choose subjects based on their perception of the type of tasks and activities required in the subject , learning environment
Skelton
Argues that the hidden curriculum is responsible for perpetrating gender differences , lead to lack of women going into certain professions such as engineering .
Heston and Lawson
Argues that the hidden curriculum is a major source of gender socialisation and operates in 5 ways :
Books and textbooks - women portrayed as dependent on men
Female students being made to feel uncomfortable in certain subjects
Teachers expectations
Patriarchal curriculum - where boys society’s are recognised more than girls and A level subject choices are very gender specific
Lack of positive role models - more teachers are female than male , but more men are senior management positions and there are fewer black female teachers
