Femenism Flashcards
Sex and gender- liberal feminism?
-(Freidan) Accept differences, but this is superiority of men is a construct created by men
-Inferiority of women is learned behaviour and is reinforced by education, institutions and media
-Want reform via legislation
Sex and gender- Radical feminism?
(Juliet Mitchell and Kate Millett)
Gender differences are more pervading than liberal feminists think, male gender exists everywhere so it must be destroyed via revolution
(Shulamith Firestone) stressed importance between sex and gender, removing sexual functions of women, replaced by androgyny (men and women coexists without sexual relations)
Sex and gender- socialist feminism?
See oppression of women as being in operation with capitalism
-Women are a cheep source of labour, in home by reproducing workforce and part time low wages leading to the becoming dispensable (when economy crashes they are fired)
-Destroy capitalism
Sex and gender- cultural feminism?
Sex and gender are linked
Essentialism (seeking to honour contrasting masculine and female characters
-The problem is not that sex and gender have been artificially connected, the problem is the roles preformed by women have been treated of lesser importance
-Remedy to this is emphasising the women’s roles that give women advantages e.g. the fact women are more socially adapted
what is sex?
Inevitable that women will take the lead role in child rearing so men will dominate in outside world of work
-Women are physically weaker than men, so influence position
-Women are born with an innate nurturing and in aggressive character, and so are less fitted to the world of competitive capitalism
Gender?
Men have a vested interest in maintaning their dominant gender role in society
The gender role of women is embedded in consciousness from an early age to such an extent that women themselves don’t undertsnad patriarchal
origin
-In modern society there’s no reason why the different biological status of women should affect their role in the economy, gender differes are therefore an artificial construct reignited in to patriarchy
liberal femenism on public v private?
We should get involved in the public as actions do affect others e.g. how women are treated in the workplace so can be overcome by acts like sex discrimination aswell as gender pay gap
-Private sphere is no concern of others, we should have legislation to have choice to be a housewife or to have a career but this isn’t anyone’s concern
Radical femenism- person’s political?
no distinction between private and public spheres
If men and women are kept at home and engage on child rearing and homeworker, it’s not a private matter it’s a matter of the patriarchy
The persons political
Germaine greer- person is politcial?
persons political fell into field of intimate sex relationship between men and women
Relationships determined by men who managed to make women ashamed of themselves in interest or men
Private matter of relationship become political in nature expression of power excersised by men over women
post modernism- the persons political?
Family is a patriarchal unit, passing on dominated values based on not just gender but also race and class
Socialist femenist- persons political?
Reject the private and public split, seeing sexual inequality root in the public sphere of the economy spreading into home and family unit
The state liberal femenism?
The state aren’t doing enough to adress inferior position of women see state associate e.g. anti discrimination legislation- all modern states have outlawed discrimination against women
Either in law or constitutional
Laws imposing equal pay etc
Radical feminism and the state?
They say reforms don’t adress the systematic nature of discrimination exploiting and inequality
They say that the state is powerless to combat the deep rooted problem of patriarchy
Reform vs revolution- liberal fem?
Gaining equaling by reform as this can achieve equal access for all to the public by making rules
Reform v Revolution- radical femenism?
Root of oppression in patriarchy and the common experience of oppression creating a collective identity for women and sisterhood
Revolution or cultural social and sexual revolution
Post modernist femenist reform v revolution?
sees opression as rooted in gender as well as class and race, revolution tackles interlocking system of opress through an approach based on solidarity across the different groups who have their own race
Society radical femenism?
Patriarchy is the key characteristic of modern society and it’s women who are exploited groups
See removal of patriarchy as vital to the emancipation of women
This is only way to stop patriarchy
First attack on cultural value in society
The other through the reaction of femal counter culture
Society equality femenist?
Want equality for women in all spheres
Society difference femenist?
Complex women have differences and should be recognised in society
Difference vs equality?
All strand of feminism subscribe to andrygony and idea that personhood is different
All strands agree between the distinction of sex and gender and that genders socially constructed between men and women
