Feline Dermatoses (Gram) Flashcards
Miliary dermatitis syndrome (Scabby cat disease)
- Not a specific diagnosis, it’s a symptom/rxn pattern
- “Seedy”
Miliary dermatitis syndrome clinical signs
Papular seedy eruption, frequently on dorsal neck and back
Miliary dermatitis syndrome etiologies
- Fleas, notoedres, otodectes
- Flea allergy, atopy, food allergy
- Dermatophyte, bacteria
Miliary dermatitis syndrome diagnosis
- Clinical signs
- Look for underlying cause
- Hx suggestive of allergies
- Skin scrapings
- Fungal culture
- Response to flea control
Miliary dermatitis syndrome treatment
- Long term (define underlying cause)
- Short term
- Depomedrol
- Prednisolone
- Other immunomodulating agents
Eosinophilic Granuloma Complex manifestations
- Indolent ulcer
- Eosinophilic plaque
- Collagenolytic granuloma
Indolent ulcer (eosinophilic granuloma complex)
- Inflammatory ulcer usually located on upper lip
- Unilateral or bilateral
- Potential concurrent nodular pharyngeal granuloma
- Associated w/ underlying allergy
- Rarely can progress to squamous cell carcinoma
(Indolent in this case means painless or slow to change)
Indolent ulcer (eosinophilic granuloma complex) diagnosis
- Clinical signs & hx
- Biopsy
- R/O other conditions
- Check to see if it’s become neoplastic
- +/- eosinophils
Indolent ulcer (eosinophilic granuloma complex) treatment
-
Treat underlying disease
- Flea control
- Abx
- Glucocorticoids
- +/- cyclosporine
- Chlorambucil (resistant ulcers)
Eosinophilic plaque (eosinophilic granuloma complex) clinical features
- Well circumscribed red/yellow edematous plaque
- Intensely pruritic
- Groin or medial thighs
- Associated w/ allergic dz (esp. flea allergy)
Eosinophilic plaque (eosinophilic granuloma complex) diagnosis
- Clinical signs
- Histopathylogy
- spongiotic dermatitis w/ severe eosinophilic infiltrate
Eosinophilic plaque (eosinophilic granuloma complex) treatment
- Control underlying allergy
- ASIT
- Food trial
- Flea control
- Glucocorticoids or cyclosporine
Collagenolytic granuloma (eosinophilic granuloma complex) forms
- Linear granuloma (linear, raised, on caudal aspect of hind legs, variable pruritis)
- Nodular pharyngeal granuloma (firm pink/yellow lesions, usually assoc. w/ indolent ulcer)
- Chin form (“fat chin”)
Collagenolytic granuloma (eosinophilic granuloma complex) diagnosis
- Hx
- Clinical signs
- Histopathology
Collagenolytic granuloma (eosinophilic granuloma complex) treatment
- Glucocorticoids
- Look for underlying allergy
Feline mosquito hypersensitivity
- Seasonal, non-pruritic dermatitis
- Mosquitoes and culicoides
- Typically outdoor cats
Feline mosquito hypersensitivity clinical signs
- Papular, ulcerative nodular lesions
- Nose
- Pinnae
- Paws
Feline mosquito hypersensitivity diagnosis
- Hx
- Clinical signs
- Histopath
Feline mosquito hypersensitivity treatment
- Glucocorticoids
- Avoid mosquitos
Causes of feline alopecia
- Self-induced
- Pruritis (allergy, ectoparasites, infection)
- Behavioral (excess grooming)
- Endocrine
Self induced alopecia clinical signs
- Bilateral hair loss on sides and flanks
- Normal skin
- Broken hairs
Causes of generalized alopecia
- Dermatophytosis
- Demodicosis
- Autoimmune dz
- Telogen defluxation
- Congenital or inherited alopecia
- Follicular defect
- Paraneoplastic alopecia
Flea allergy diagnosis
- Signalment
- Clinical signs
- Resolution w/ aggressive flea control
- Double down flea control
- Environmental flea control
- Continuous, consistent flea control
Food allergy
Rare, not related to change in diet
Food allergy dianosis
- R/O other diseases
- Limited antigen source diet trial
Feline atopy
- Generalized miliary dermatitis
- Eosinophilic dermatitis w/ or w/ out plaque lesions
- Symmetricla hair loss from self-trauma
- Diagnosis by exclusion
- Tx w/ ASIT
ASIT
Allergen specific immunotherapy
Therapy of feline dermatoses
- Short term
- Symptomatic treatment
- Depomedrol
