Feedlot Cattle Flashcards
What factors affect the frequency, magnitude, and economic value of feedlot diseases?
Recent weaning Natural and acquired immunity Source of animals Transportation stress Commingling Dietary change
What kind of diseases are the most important cause of sickness and death and chronic poor-doing animals?
Respiratory.
Bovine Respiratory Disease
Responsible for 75% of feedlot deaths in Colorado.
Predisposing factors: commingling, stressors, and altered immune statuses. Dust, mold, plant particles, and endotoxins.
The result is pneumonia: droopy ears, dull eyes, off feed and skinny.
Peaks in fall and early winter.
What does FUO stand for?
Fever of Unknown Origin
What are the primary viruses associated with shipping fever?
Infectious Bovine Rhinotracheitis
Parainfluenza Virus-3
Respiratory Syncytial Virus
Bovine Virus Diarrhea
What are the primary bacterias associated with shipping fever?
Mannheimia haemolytica Pasteurella multocida Histophilus somni Mycoplasma bovis Trueperella pyogenes
What kind of diseases rank second to respiratory diseases for morbidity and mortality?
Digestive diseases.
What is the primary digestive disease in feedlot cattle?
Ruminal Acidosis
Ruminal Acidosis
Exposed to a larger amount of concentrate rations abruptly. The pH of the rumen declines which makes it more acidic. There is damage to the mucosal lining, death of microflora, and death of microbes.
Animals appear drunk. Feeding grass hays, antibiotics, electrolytes and laxatives.
Histophilosis
One or both papillary muscles of the left side are involved. The tissues die.
Clostridium chauvoel
The cause of blackleg. Death is sudden. There may be concurrent lesions in the skeletal muscles.
Myocardial Degradation
Caused by vitamin E, selenium and, rarely, copper deficiencies.
Toxic Myocardial Degradation
Excessive use of ionophores. Can be due to accidental mixing or accidental incorporation.
Animals experience weakness, tremors, rapid heart rate, and death.
This closely resembles Brisket disease and unless altitude is not a factor there may be a hardship in diagnosing.
Thrombotic meningoencehpalitis
More common bacterial disease of the nervous system.
Also called “sleeper syndrome” because of the appearance of infected animals.
Leptospirosis
A urinary system disease.
Associated with contaminated water systems.
Bacterium in the blood destroys red blood cells which leases to anemia. It attacks the kidneys which means it is easily shed through urine.
