Feeding Relationships Flashcards
Where and how do animals get their food
From plants and either directly or indirectly
What are herbivores
- They are vegetarians
- means they eat plants
- primary consumers
What do Herbivores do
- Eat dead or living plants
- adapted to digest large amounts of plants materials
What are animals known as
Consumers
Carnivores diets consists of
Other animals
Are meat eaters
What consumers are carnivores
Secondary and tertiary
Carnivores animal are adopted to
Hunt and catch other animals
They have sharp teeth and claws
What are the three different carnivores
Predators
Scavengers
Insectivores
What do predators do
They hunt and those animals are called pray
What do scavengers feed on
On animals that are already dead
What do scavengers do
Often try and steal food from predators
What do insectivores mainly feed on
On insects and other smaller invertebrates eg earthworms
What do omnivores eat
Plant and animals that means anything
What are omnivores
Some are predators because they hunt
But they also need plants as a source of nutrients
Eg grizzly bear
What are detritivores
They are scavengers
Feed on detritus/waste
What do detritivores do
Enlarge the contact surface waste
Made easier for decomposers to decompose material
They speed up the process of decomposition
What are decomposers
Microorganisms that decompose the remains of dead plants and animals
What do decomposers do
They recycle dead plants and animal material into chemical substances
Put the nutrients back into the soil
They make the soil fertile and make it possible for plants to grow
Eg carbon and nitrogen
